UNTREATeD WOOD

Particular care and attention must be given to untreated wood furniture. First, lightly wash the surface with a damp cloth using soap and water for a gentle cleaning treatment. For stains that are not removed with this method, gently use a scrubbing brush making sure to always scrub in a longitudinal direction with the grain. Rinse off all soap and allow the wood to dry. It’s important to not cover the wood with material or objects until the surface is completely dry.

OILED WOOD

This type of finished wood surface typically has a strong, smooth finish that is water repellent when used in normal daily activity and cleaned with non-abrasive methods. It’s best to simply wipe these surfaces clean with a damp cloth using a circular motion. Solvents should not be used on lacquered or painted wood surfaces as chemicals will degrade the finish.

LACQUERED & PAINTED

cLeANING SCHEDULE

A schedule of cleaning using a foam based cleaner is recommended once you notice that regular vacuuming and dusting is no longer sufficient. How often this is done depends on the furniture usage, however as a general rule, areas of the furniture that come into contact with skin should have a deep clean once every three months. sTAIN REMOVAL

Accidental spills inevitably will happen, it is important to treat the spill / stain immediately to help reduce the chance of permanent damage. A new stain is much easier to remove than one which is allowed to soak and dry into the fabric fibres. Many common household cleaners are often too strong for fabrics, and never use products containing solvents or oil, as they can damage fabrics.

COLOUR FASTNESS 

With stain removal and regular cleaning, you should always check that colours and dyes in the fabric can withstand the detergent you intend to use. First, test the detergent on a small inconspicuous area that will not be visible. Leave the area to dry and confirm the results do not adversely affect the fabric.

LIGHT FASTNESS

Many items of furniture are affected by UV rays and direct sunlight. All exposure to light will degrade fibres and textiles. Furniture textiles are tested and approved for light fastness, however exposure to direct sunlight and locations with intense rays of light through windows should be avoided to minimise damage to dyes from harmful UV rays. Blinds and curtains will help and are recommended, but please be aware that not all harmful UV rays will be stopped. When furniture is left in a room for extended periods of time whilst your away from home the furniture should be individually covered.

FABRIC PRESERVATION

To maximise the lifetime of fabrics it’s important to follow a good care and maintenance regime. The regularity of your furniture use will show on the material and if the furniture is used intensively, you may choose to protect the fabric with covers or protective sleeves. Clothing with rough seams or sharp edges like rivets, belt buckles or sharp objects like tools in pockets increase the chance of wear showing on your furniture with increased risk of pulls and tears in the material thread. It should be noted in particular that new denim, and clothing with excess dye can cause discoloration.

PETS

Our much loved four-legged friends do not mix well with upholstered furniture. Embedded hair, nails and clawing tugs on the fabric inevitably will cause damage. It is recommended that animals are kept away from furniture fabrics so far as is practicable and acceptable to both you and your pets well-being.

STAIN REMOVAL

Contact areas such as armrests and neck pillows are exposed to grease and acidic sweat resulting in dark spots, which over time will degrade furniture leather. Chemical ingredients from hair gel and hand creams can also cause similar damage. 

For stain removal chemicals should not be used on furniture leather. For tougher stains in need of more treatment you should consult specific advice provided with your furniture as this will vary depending upon the type and quality of leather. Water soluble stains should be washed off immediately with a clean white, soft cloth or sponge using lukewarm water.

PROTECTING LEATHER

Furniture leather ages best when protected from prolonged exposure to sunlight, drying out and heat. Direct sunlight will cause fading and drying out of the skin upholstery, as well as other heat sources that will lead to fading and cracking of all leather variants. A common overlooked heat source is hot laptop batteries which should be kept away from leather furniture.

It may be prudent during social occasions to cover sofas and chairs. Using blankets, throws and soft cushions are a good attractive way to help protect your furniture.

PETS

Pet owners must accept that our favourite furry's will find pleasure in clawing furniture and inevitably jump up at every opportunity. In particular avoid smooth, bonded, and synthetic leather if you have pets.

Genuine leather furniture can be more resistant to occasional scratches and easier to buff out marks and therefore more preferable for pet owners so long as you're prepared to accept a distressed look over time. As a pet owner make sure your furniture has a "Genuine Leather" seal.
